Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated fungus found in the environment. Most people who are exposed to C. neoformans do not get sick, but immunocompromised individuals are more likely to be infected. Lung infections, known as pulmonary cryptococcosis, are most common and can develop after inhaling the fungus, but the skin, eyes, bones, joints, and myocardium can also be affected. Meningitis can also result, often as a secondary infection.
