Staphylococcus epidermidis is a Gram-positive commensal bacterium found on the skin. However, S. epidermidis can cause opportunistic infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals or those with implanted medical devices. S. epidermidis is notoriously difficult to treat, as many strains are resistant to common antibiotics.
