Propionibacterium acnes is a Gram-positive bacterium which can cause a skin condition known as acne. P. acnes lives beneath the surface of the skin, deep in follicles and pores. The organism uses sebum for energy and nutrients, and excess sebum production can cause the bacteria to grow and multiply. Adolescents are most prone to developing acne.
