Neisseria meningitidis is a Gram-negative bacterium that can cause very serious and even fatal cases of meningitis and bacteremia. The highest rates of N. meningitidis infection are found in sub-Saharan Africa, but about 10% of people are carriers without any signs or symptoms of disease. Vaccination and/or prophylactic antibiotic treatment can protect against some strains.
