Mycobacterium avium is a Gram-positive bacterium related to tuberculosis. It is often found in a complex (MAC) with Mycobacterium intracellulare. Although most people do not get sick from MAC, those who are elderly, immunocompromised, or have chronic lung diseases are most at risk for severe illness. M. avium is found in dust, soil, and water and can cause infection when inhaled or swallowed.
