Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative bacterium found in the environment and the GI tract, as well as contaminated food and water. E. coli is very diverse; some strains are harmless while others can cause diarrhea, vomiting, urinary tract infections (UTI), pneumonia, and even kidney failure.
