Coxsackievirus B3 is an enterovirus, a family of viruses composed of a single strand of RNA, that lives in the digestive tract. Type B3 is known to cause severe infection and inflammation in organ tissues such as the heart, pancreas, liver, and brain. Coxsackieviruses are highly contagious and spread easily through unwashed hands, surfaces contaminated by feces, and airborne fluid droplets from a sneeze or cough.
