Trypanosoma cruzi is a parasite that causes Chagas disease, a zoonotic illness which is transmitted to humans via infected insects. The CDC considers T. cruzi a neglected parasitic infection (NPI) needing public health action. Residents of and travelers to Mexico, Central America, and South America are at highest risk for contracting Chagas disease, as the triatomine bug which carries T. cruzi thrives in these regions.
