Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacterium commonly found in moist environments such as hot tubs and swimming pools. P. aeruginosa can cause bacteremia, pneumonia, and infections of the ears, eyes, bone, and urinary tract. These infections usually occur in hospitalized patients and those with weakened immune systems. Multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains of Pseudomonas are becoming increasingly common and are considered a serious threat by the CDC. In fact, P. aeruginosa is one of six ESKAPE pathogens – a group of bacteria capable of escaping the actions of antibiotics – leading to higher rates of resistance and transmission.
