Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) causes a lifelong and incurable infection. Although most infections are asymptomatic, the virus can cause blisters or ulcers at the site of infection, even many years after infection due to recurrence. HSV-1 is mainly transmitted by oral-to-oral contact, resulting in “cold sores” in or around the mouth, but can also be sexually transmitted and result in genital herpes. HSV-1 is likely to recur more frequently and cause more severe symptoms in immunocompromised individuals.
