Enterococcus faecalis is a Gram-positive bacterium that makes up the normal gut flora in humans and animals. E. faecalis can cause urinary tract infections (UTI), bacteremia, wound infections, endocarditis, and meningitis. The organism is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, most notably vancomycin (vancomycin-resistant enterococci, or VRE), prompting a need for novel therapeutics.
