Coxsackievirus A9
Coxsackievirus A9
Coxsackievirus A9 is an enterovirus, a family of viruses composed of a single strand of RNA, that lives in the digestive tract. Type A9 commonly causes exanthema (rash), herpangina (sores in the throat), and hand, foot, and mouth disease. More serious infections can also develop, including hepatitis and encephalitis. Children under 5 years of age are most likely to contract the virus as it is highly contagious and spreads easily through unwashed hands, surfaces contaminated by feces, and airborne fluid droplets from a sneeze or a cough.
